AI phone answering for restaurants, compared

Facts verified on vendor sites November 1, 2026 · Editorial, not sponsored · How we evaluate

AI voice agents can now answer a restaurant's phone, book or change reservations, take takeout orders and answer the same questions about hours and parking all night. The four tools we list fall into two camps: reservation-led (Slang AI, Bookline) and order-led (Loman, Owner.com). Everything below comes from each vendor's own site, and none of these vendors paid to appear.

Our take: If reservations drive your calls, start with Slang AI (OpenTable or SevenRooms houses) or Bookline (also WhatsApp, strong outside the US). If takeout drives your calls, start with Loman, which names the major POS systems and takes payments. If you're already on Owner.com, join its AI Phone Ordering waitlist.

How to choose

  1. Count your calls first. Spend a week tallying calls by type (reservation, order, hours/directions, events). The biggest bucket tells you which camp you need.
  2. Match the integration to your system of record. Reservations should land in your reservation platform. Orders should land in your POS. If yours isn't named, ask for a live demo on it.
  3. Test it by calling. Loman and Bookline both invite you to call a demo line. Try an interruption, a change of mind and an allergy question.
  4. Decide what always goes to a person. Allergies, complaints, large parties and VIPs are common choices. Confirm the handoff path and what happens when no one picks up.
  5. Get the full cost in writing: per-location fees, per-minute or per-call charges, setup and contract length.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI answer my restaurant's phone and book reservations?

Yes. Slang AI and Bookline both describe booking and modifying reservations by phone, and Loman lists reservations alongside orders. Confirm the tool connects to your reservation platform so bookings appear without re-keying.

Which AI phone tools take orders and payments?

Loman says it takes pickup and delivery orders, syncs them to POS systems including Square, Toast, SpotOn and Clover, and takes card payments. Owner.com's AI Phone Ordering takes orders and sends them to the kitchen; it is currently waitlist-only.

Does Slang AI work with Resy?

Slang AI's integrations page lists OpenTable, SevenRooms, Yelp, Tripleseat and Perfect Venue. We didn't see Resy listed, so ask Slang directly.

How many restaurants use AI phone answering?

It's still a minority. In TouchBistro's 2026 American State of Restaurants Report, a survey of 600+ US full-service operators, 22% said they use AI phone answering and 30% use AI for reservations or booking. Source: TouchBistro, 2026 (p. 49).

Should an AI agent answer allergy questions?

Be careful. Owner.com routes allergy questions to staff by default. If any tool answers them, make sure its answers come only from an allergen matrix you maintain, and add a 'please confirm with your server' line.
